Cold winds, low humidity, cool temperatures and indoor heating can all cause your skin to dry out, especially the skin your hands that can also be exposed to an array of chemicals from hand soaps, dish wash liquid, cleaners, shampoos, conditioners, and laundry products, etc. The first step to solving dry, flaky, chapped skin is to stop using these products and start using natural alternatives that will actually moisturise and care for your skin instead of drying it out.
Something else to be aware of, is how well hydrated you are, even the skin on your hands will thank you for drinking around 8-10 glasses of filtered water a day. Cutting down on caffeine and alcohol and having plenty of essential fatty acids in your diet is also recommended for skin health, particularly omegas 3 and 6, personally, I like to take a supplement to ensure I get enough omegas on a daily basis, Hemp Seed Oil is perfect for this.
Using a super moisturising natural hand cream or lotion is also a winter essential. In the book “Recipes For A Cleaner Life”, there’s a super three ingredient recipe for White Satin on page 65, it has a hint of rose and is just the thing to apply often throughout the day to protect your hands. If you don’t have a copy of the book here’s the recipe for you to try, it’s an oldie but a goodie.
White Satin Hand Lotion
1 cup rose-water
1 tbsp cornflour
1 tbsp glycerine
1 drop Rose Geranium essential oil (this is not in the original recipe but I like the addition)
Put all ingredients into a jar or bottle and shake thoroughly until combined, apply to your hands as often as required. You’ll have to shake well each time before use as the cornflour will settle to the bottom.
